A New England Spring Cleaning Checklist, Room by Room
After a long Massachusetts winter with the windows closed, your home deserves a fresh start. A practical room-by-room spring cleaning checklist.

Months of closed windows, running heat and tracked-in snow leave every New England home ready for a reset. Spring cleaning does not have to take over every weekend in April. Work through it room by room and spread the list over a few weeks.
Kitchen
- Empty and wipe the fridge, tossing anything that lingered through winter
- Degrease the range hood and filter, which work overtime in cold months
- Wipe cabinet fronts and the tops of upper cabinets
- Clean behind and under small appliances
Bathrooms
- Scrub grout and caulk where winter humidity encouraged mildew
- Wash or replace the shower liner and bath mats
- Clear out expired medicine and old products
Bedrooms
- Swap heavy winter bedding for lighter layers and wash the duvet
- Flip or rotate the mattress
- Vacuum under the bed, where dust gathers all winter
Living areas
- Dust ceiling fans before you turn them on for the first time
- Vacuum radiators and baseboard heaters, which collect a surprising amount of dust
- Wash windows and screens once the pollen settles
Entry and mudroom
- Wash winter mats and store boots, salt-stained gear and ice scrapers
- Wipe walls and baseboards near the door, where splashes dried all winter
